THE FANTASY
AND
SCIENCE FICTION
MAILING LIST
|
WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF THIS LIST?
Its aim is quite simply to promote intelligent discussion of Science
Fiction and Fantasy. I got tired of all the SPAM and flame fests on
usenet and I'm trying to create an interesting alternative.
By intelligent discussion I don't mean that you have to come up with
detailed critiques of everything, just that we will rise above "That
sucks!" type posts.
I also want this list to be a resource for people giving them up to
date news and information, suggestions for other things to read/watch
etc. Above all I want it to be fun.
In order to achieve that I've established some simple rules.
LIST RULES
Okay here's the list rules. Nothing too unreasonable I hope.
- Please try to stay on topic, the odd message here and there doesn't
matter but no off topic threads please.
- What is on topic? Anything relating to SF and Fantasy. It can be
tv programmes, movies, books whatever. News is always welcome.
reviews are always good for sparking off a discussion. Two things I'd
like to put in place once we have a few more people on the list are
Top Ten lists (For books, movies and tv progs) and an archive of book
reviews.
- Arguments are fine so long as they don't get personal. Oh, but do
try and stay away from the cliches (B5 vs DS9 for example). When
comparing one book/film/programme to something else, don't just put
down one to show how good the other is.
- Quoting. Keep it to a minimum if you can. Remove all the
unneccessary stuff, after all we've read it once already.
- Spoilers. In the main a commonsense approach will do. Don't
reveal the end of a story or major plot point unless specifically asked to
and even then include some spoiler space.
- Spoiler space. Its a very simple concept. Put SPOILERS in
capital letters and then leave at least 20 blank lines before
continuing with the information.
- Babylon 5. This is the exception to the rules for spoilers.
Because B5 is a continuing story avoiding spoilers is problematic.
Since this is an international list people will be at different points
in the story. So to avoid trouble, please indicate what episode you
are talking about in the subject heading of the mail. If its not
about a particular episode then mention what season it refers to. This
way people can avoid reading those mails.
- Complaints. If you're unhappy with something I've done or
something someone else on the list has done then mail me privately.
Don't send it to the list. Similarly if I'm unhappy with someones
actions I will mail them privately to warn them. No one will be
thrown off the list without a warning.
Okay thats it for the moment. If you think I've missed something or
something in these rules is unfair let me know. I'll read it and
ignore it. ;)

THE FSF ARCHIVE
Older posts from before the start of that archive are here.
THE WEBSITE
This is a new web site devoted purely to the list. I'll put anything up
here that people find interesting. If you have any midi files, episode
guides or anything else, let me know.
One specific list area that I have already set up is the BOOK REVIEWS page. Its not very busy yet, but
I hope to add to it all the time with new reviews from list members.
I have just added a reciprocal links page for
the mailing list. Link to the list and you will get either a graphic
or text link in return.
