It continually placed high in the syndicated ratings, with only FOX's animated "Batman" series vying for the title of first place winner in the ratings among syndicated science fiction shows. Many people often felt however, that the type of stories that could be told from the perspective of crew members cruising through the galaxy on a spaceship were limited and different from the kind of adventures and stories that could be told in a more static environment such as those on a stationary space station. And so, the concept of telling stories which centered around the personnel of a spacestation in a fixed orbit, began to take shape. Providing the background for the concept was the long war between the Bajorans and the Cardassians - two races introduced on Star Trek: The Next Generation. The background of the space station is simple - it was a mining station built by the Cardassians while they were in military control of Bajor. After the truce between the two warring factions, aided by the Federation, the Cardassians agreed to vacate the Bajoran system and leave the spacestation in the hands of the Bajorans. The Federation sent advisory personnel to the station to help maintain the station's facilities and to aid the Bajorans in piecing their world together and uniting various factions on the planet. On board the station representing the Federation interests are Commander Benjamin Sisko (and his son Jake), Doctor Julian Bashir, Lieutenant Jadzia Dax, and Operations Chief Miles O'Brien. Commander Sisko, as seen in the two-hour pilot episode, lost his wife in the battle against the Borg as depicted in The Next Generation episode BEST OF BOTH WORLDS, PART II and holds some small amount of enmity for Captain Picard whom he believes caused the death of his wife. Chief O'Brien was promoted from his occasional role on The Next Generation to a new and expanded role as Operations Chief in this series. O'Brien's wife, Keiko, makes occasional appearances as she did on The Next Generation. Lieutenant Jadzia Dax is a unique representative of the Federation - a member of the Trill race, first seen in The Next Generation episode, THE HOST (see star-trek-tng.guide for more details). Although outwardly she appears to be a human female, inside she has a long-lived parasitic creature with whom she shares a symbiotic relationship. She and Commander Sisko knew each other from the past - but at that time, Dax was a male. The relationsip between her and Sisko grows and changes and her relationships with others on the station should prove interesting as the series progresses. Representing the Bajorans on the station is Major Kira, an ex-member of a rebel group of Bajorans who practiced terrorist acts on the Cardassians. She has now apparently given up her former ways, and is working for the leading political faction of Bajor as a liaison to the Federation. Also aboard the station is Security Chief Odo, a member of an unknown race with the ability to transform his shape into anything he chooses. While his history is still much unknown, we do know he was the Security Chief on the station when the Cardassians were in control and was asked to remain on when the Bajorans and the Federation took over the station. The station is not primarily a military outpost (although it may have been under the Cardassians even though it was said to be a mining station) but rather it is intended to be a recreational post or way station for travelers. The promenade area of the station is occupied by various shops and other services for rest and relaxation. Running the local bar and gambling casino is Quark, a Ferengi. We know his motives are purely profitary in nature, but will he be an ally of the Federation or hinder their efforts to effect a peace on Bajor? Odo and Quark do not get along (although they seem to be friendly enemies) and it remains to be seen just how their relationship grows and changes. Moore, Rene Echevarria Story: Ira Steven Behr, Hans Beimler, Robert Hewitt Wolfe Cast: Jack Blessing (Temporal Investigator), Jams W. Jansen (Temporal Investigator), Charlie Brill (Arne Darvin), Leslie Ackerman (Waitress), Charles S. Chun (Engineer), Deirdre L. Imershein (Lieutenant Watley) and the cast of the original Star Trek episode "THE TROUBLE WITH TRIBBLES" In one of the most talked about episodes in the show's history, the crew of DS9 pick up a Bajoran orb known as the Orb of Time along with Arne Darvin (under an alias) from Cardassia. Darvin uses the orb to catapult them back in time to the time of the original series episode THE TROUBLE WITH TRIBBLES in order to enact revenge on Captain Kirk. The crew of DS9 have to stop Darvin from killing Kirk and changing history. By use of computers, and carefully filmed scenes, the crew of DS9 appeared to be in the same scenes as the original series. Although, if you watch closely, you can see where the scenes have been patched or augmented, and the sound differences between the voices of the old cast and the new cast, is a dead giveaway. Also, the scene late in the show of Spock and Kirk "meeting" Sisko is taken from a completely different episode from the old series and not from THE TROUBLE WITH TRIBBLES. Regardless, the episode was well done, and a splendid 30th anniversary homage to the original cast and crew of STAR TREK. Gul Dukat vows that Cardassia will regain all that they have lost, including DS9, and will destroy all the Klingons and Maquis left in their territory. Gowron comes to DS9 for medical aide and Sisko convinces him that if the Federation and the Klingons re-established the treaty from the Khitomer Accords (which had been broken some time back) then they could stand together against the Cardassians and the Dominion. As Sisko and a Federation task force prepare for an attack by the Cardassians and the Dominion, they continue to hunt for their saboteur. As the Federation and Klingon forces line up ready for the attack, they gain unexpected support from Romulan ships.
